The shallowell Hand pump is a simple and robust suction pump constructed almost entirely of cast iron. The piston uses a moulded PVC cup seal and the check-valve is a weighted leather flap. Repairs are simple to carry out and require only basic tools.
The suction hand pump is generally used for lifting water from a depth not exceeding 7 m. The principle components of the pump are :
-
Pump base with flapper valve and weight
-
Pump body, i.e. barrel
-
Pump head with fulcrum
-
Handle
-
Plunger rod

Construction
The pump body is made of cast iron. The piston rod is made of bright bar, electro-galvanized, The flapper valve is made out of chrome/vegetable tanned leather. The total weight of the complete suction pump is approximately 30 kg.
REQUIREMENT FOR BASE / PLATFORM
Tubewell Base
While installing, the upper most tubewell pipe should be suitably anchored in position so it does not deflect or swing while the pump is in use. Construction of a suitable base is very important to ensure the long life of tubewell. The pump is initially supported at the top-most tubewell pipe with a threaded joint between the tubewell G.I. pipe and the pump base. The pump base also in provided with an annular bearing support on the tubewell base. Besides these the pump base gets frictional support from the encasement made of cement concrete. In fact, when the pump is in use the tubewell base (pump pedestal) also works as a foundation for the pump base. The platform is similar to pla
